Colleges and universities are using social media more than ever before to connect with alumni, students, prospective students, and their communities. Power Users Shall Inherit the Internet

In a recent study, Pew Research partnered with Facebook and discovered a major phenomenon: the typical Facebook user receives more comments, message and “likes” than they give out. Why is this? Turns out, everyone has a few zealous Facebook friends who are extra engaged in one or more activities on the social network. These friends are called “power users” and are essentially invisible drivers of most of the site’s activity. What do they do, and why should businesses take notice?

Social Media Landscage

Maybe this is the reason General Motors went “mental” and pulled its Facebook ad budget.

Digital marketing is confusing—really confusing—as this insane graphic shows.

How Social Media Is Changing Sports

TwitterFacebook and other social media platforms are having a tremendous impact on the sports world for fans, players, teams and sponsors alike. We try to stay on top of that here at Mashable, bringing you stories on greatsports memes, moments of unexpected discovery, sophisticated marketing strategies and more.

But sometimes a stellar infographic is needed to put things in perspective. This one, from the sports medicine company KT Tape, shows the different ways social media has changed sports during the past few years.

More than 80% of sports fans monitor social media sites while watching games on TV, and more than 60% do so while watching live events. Players have capitalized on social media and fueled massive buzz as well. More than 9,000 people per second tweeted about Tim Tebow after he threw an unexpected touchdown pass in last season’s NFL Playoffs. Jeremy Lin gained more than 550,000 followers in a single month while taking the NBA by storm earlier this year. And soccer stars Kaka and Ronaldo have leveraged their sport’s global reach to become Twitter’s two most-followed athletes.

KT Tape pulled research from The Wall Street Journal, ESPN.com, CBSSports.com and other sources to compile these facts and much more.

The 10 Most Popular Baseball Teams on Social Media

Glad to see my STL Cardinals are among the top 10 teams in social media. However, I don’t like seeing those pesky Cubs ahead of them!!

The 2012 baseball season is under way, and the New York Yankees already have bragging rights—on Facebook and Twitter.

Among all Major League Baseball teams, the Bronx Bombers have the most Facebook fans with more than 5.3 million people “liking” the team’s page. On Twitter, it has roughly 550,000 followers.

That’s according to social media agency Banyan Branch, which spent the off season analyzing the social media stats of baseball teams and players. In an infographic, the agency reveals the 10 most liked baseball teams on social media, as well as the most valuable tweeters, the most active tweeters, and more. Take a look:

What Makes a Social Media Expert?

What makes a social media professional or expert? I don’t know about everybody else, but I get tired of different “experts” telling everyone what is appropriate social media practices and what isn’t. To me, it is pretty apparent that what works for some companies, individuals or organizations is not always going to work for others. Yet, when companies try something different or what the “experts” consider a social media failure, they get blasted.

I don’t consider myself an expert on social media, it is constantly changing and improving, so I consider myself a social media evolver. However, I see different individuals on Twitter saying what is appropriate and what isn’t for social media usage. Where are these rules? Am I missing something?

Companies have to develop a plan and policy that they are comfortable with. Is it going to change? I would hope so. Social Media Managers and businesses have to be prepared to adjust to changes in platforms, as well as, the development of new ones. Also, organizations have to decide what is best for them. For instance, I enjoy Pinterest, but I don’t think this platform is for every company; it is a powerful media, but you have to have the right services and products to make it work.

Also, I believe it is ok to have your Facebook Page linked to your Twitter account for updates to be shared. I truly don’t see the harm. This is my opinion, but I have seen so many “experts” saying this is not appropriate. Why? Because it is simple, convenient and it works? Because it spreads your message across multiple platforms? When did this become a poor practice? I think that as long as you are interacting with your followers on all of your platforms, then this is acceptable.

Finally, and then my rant will be over…until next time. But, if your company believes in what it is doing on social media networks, and you feel it is a success; then it is. ROI is hard to measure on social media, is it really going to bring in big money? Probably not, but is it going to help you grow a committed “fan-base”, clients that will return to your business and an easy way to deliver your message? Absolutely. Use social media wisely, use it often, but most importantly, use it a manner that you are comfortable with and that is convenient for you.
