How Higher Education Uses Social Media

Schools are on a short list of organizations that have been notoriously slow to adopt emerging tech. But within the last few years, as social media becomes more integral to students’ lives, educational institutions are finally catching on, and catching up.

When it comes to higher ed, there are not only opportunities for digital learning, but digital marketing too. Some schools have taken the reigns on both sides, with mixed results.

The infographic below takes a look at how schools have fared with social media over the last few years — what platforms are best, where they’ve succeeded, and the challenges that lay ahead.

A World Without Facebook

Facebook is a “must have” to keep tabs on, as its 800 million plus users means it is the defacto social network platform of choice for nearly one in two of the world’s web users.

What are four trends to watch and potential impacts to consider with Facebook in 2012?

- Its ecosystem with easy to install “apps” and burgeoning commerce and marketing power continue to attract business and marketers. Essentially you market on facebook first and then consider other platforms.

- The new emerging eCommerce paradigm of taking your shop “to the network” rather than driving visitors to your portal will reshape global business. “Omni Commerce” has truly arrived.

- Its new “Timeline” feature redesign with larger images and banner space offers a compelling visual anchor that raises its addiction powers to new levels.

- Facebook is evolving into a more mature extension of your website design, function and content.

The evolution of Facebook continues to be met by grass roots protest that rails against any change that rumbles people’s comfort zones. Despite this Facebook has no choice but to add and modify its features and functions to keep pace with Google+ and savvy upstarts which are a new generation social networks with no legacy baggage.

It is not time for Facebook to rest on its very large laurels or take its users for granted.

Tumblr By The “Numbrs”

Tumblr is a multimedia rich microblogging platform that allows users to post text, images, videos, links, quotes and audio to their short form blog. It is about ease of use.

The numbers for this platform are too significant to ignore.

  • 900% growth in the last 12 months
  • 90 million users compared to only 10 million a year ago
  • Addictive and highly engaged audience with 2% of its audience making up 43% of total visits

The engagement on Tumblr is only second to Facebook at an average of over 141 minutes per month per user.

Ease of use and making it simple to post images plays into a web that embraces high definition and addictive images.

Since joining Tumblr in 2007, I have observed the performance of the platform with a distinct intrigue for its potential as a social network. In many ways, Tumblr has been a breath of fresh air in a digital world where creativity and originality are often restrained by marketing and SEO strategies. Tumblr is a community where artists, writers, brands and bloggers from across the world unite to share their interests. In retrospect, Tumblr offers more flexibility than Twitter, easier set up and customization than WordPress and more privacy than Facebook. When combined, these features provide the recipe for a truly invigorating online experience.
In June 2011, Tumblr officially surpassed WordPress in growth with more than 20 million blogs.  Though Tumblr is a full four years younger than WordPress, growth between the two platforms has skyrocketed within the past year. Both platforms grew by more than 10 million blogs, but it’s the overall simplicity and innovation of Tumblr that has many bloggers choosing Tumblr over WordPress.

“Unlike blogging, where you spend time thinking carefully about what you say in each post, Tumblr is really more about the moment of consciousness, and capturing a snapshot of it. Hence, where blog posts are supposed to be solid and stand-alone, Tumblr posts stand in relation to an entire thread of posts. That’s why looking at a Tumblr page is like taking a peek into a person’s stream of consciousness.”

The Manila Bulletin: Retention, self-expression, Tumblr

Much of the intrigue with Tumblr comes from the potential (and ease) in optimizing the platform for personalized use. And though it’s impossible to question the capabilities of WordPress, there’s little denying that set up and customization of WP blogs is a headache waiting to happen. Coupled with the added costs of domain hosting and custom CSS, it’s easy to see why so many bloggers are soaking up the (free) innovations of Tumblr. Take a look at how these brands have used Tumblr to target their audience in new ways:

How to Monetize Social Media

Came across this article via a friend’s referral, found it to be very interesting and informative. There are so many businesses, small and large, that are not taking advantage of the marketing opportunities offered by social media outlets. Updates and posts are great, but interaction and driving your customers to your business is critical.
